Diabetes and COVID-19: The Stats

The Key Statistic – NHS England (last updated 27 May)

1 in 4 people who have died with COVID-19 in hospitals in England have had diabetes

Important to note…

The data shows that for people unwell enough to be in hospital with COVID-19, diabetics have a higher risk of dying. The data, however, also suggests that diabetics are at NO GREATER RISK OF CATCHING COVID-19 than anyone else.

The greatest risk factor still appears to be AGE

NHS England – Deaths in people with diabetes from coronavirus in hospital by age, NHS England, 1 March to 11 May 2020

Even taking into account overlapping risk factors, the figures show that Type 1 diabetics (in hospital) are still 3.5X as likely to die and Type 2 diabetics are TWICE as likely to die than people in hospital with COVID-19.
